🧩 Grammar Focus

Structures from this story worth practicing.

① 几 — asking "how many" (usually under 10)
疑问代词 "几"
几 + Measure word + Noun
asks about a number, typically one expected to be under 10. It's always followed directly by a measure word before the noun, e.g. 几口人, 几个学生.
你家有口人?
Nǐ jiā yǒu jǐ kǒu rén?
How many people are in your family?
② 了 — marking a change or new situation
"了" 表变化
Sentence + 了
At the end of a sentence, signals that something has changed or a new state has come about — often used with age to mean "now" or "already."
她今年四岁
Tā jīnnián sì suì le.
She's four years old now.
③ 多 + 大 — asking about age
"多+大" 表示疑问
多 + 大 (+ 了)
To ask someone's age, combine ("to what degree") with ("old") — 多大(了)? literally means "how old (already)?"
李老师多大了?
Lǐ lǎoshī duō dà le?
How old is Teacher Li?
④ Numbers up to 100 — the tens pattern
百以内的数字
[Tens digit] + 十 (+ [Ones digit])
Numbers from 10–99 follow a simple pattern: the tens digit, then (shí, "ten"), then the ones digit if there is one. 五十 = 5×10 = fifty; 二十 = 2×10 = twenty.
她女儿今年二十岁。
Tā nǚ'ér jīnnián èrshí suì.
Her daughter is twenty this year.
